SOCIAL SERVICE ASSISTANTS (SSAs) schedule, coordinate, and supervise recreational and other group activities. Additionally, they provide input in the planning of program activities, maintain consistency and safety among clients, observe and record behavior patterns to aid in counseling and or service planning for clients, and document both positive and negative behavior patterns. They provide leadership and direction to resident clients in performing daily housekeeping duties, chores, physical activity, recreation, hygiene, school work etc.; giving practical advice and counsel to clients in order to assist in developing skills. 


Education:   Bachelor's degree in psychology, corrections, or related field or equivalence of education and experience demonstrating necessary competencies.

Experience:   Previous experience working in a residential setting with at-risk youth preferred. 

Availability:   Varies based on assigned shift. PLEASE NOTE: This position is required to work swing shifts, overnight shifts, or weekend shifts when determined by the needs of the program. 


  • Valid Oregon Driver's License and insurable under agency's insurance
  • Eligible for QMHA certification
  • Ability to pass Pro ACT crisis intervention training which includes verbal and physical intervention principles. (See Looking Glass employment page for details.)

Essential Functions: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Maintains therapeutic milieu by: implementing activities and skill building groups, developing treatment focused plans, maintaining safety, supervision, and security.

Monitors residents' behavior and conduct and intervenes based on program guidelines.

Perform Pro-Act trained restraints in accordance to program policy; ensuring client health and safety.

Acts as a positive role model.

Co-facilities group counseling and group skill building activities. 

May carry a caseload of assigned youth. If carrying caseload then:

  • Assist therapist in developing service plans and behavior support plans.
  • Assists youth in developing and working toward goals.
  • Maintains appropriate contact with families/guardian of assigned youth.
  • Evaluates progress on service plan goals for assigned youth and attends review meetings.

May act as shift lead during overnight shifts or as assigned in the absence of the regular lead.

May act as a medication supervisor during overnight shifts or as assigned and administers all medications to youth according to program policy and procedure.

May provide behavior support and tutoring in the classroom during school hours.

Performs housekeeping, maintenance, and clerical duties appropriate to the assigned shift.

Documentation in logs, progress notes, and behavior support plans, email, and checklists.

Attends staff meetings and trainings.

Completes other duties as assigned.
